Ozone in Swimming Pools
Disinfection of swimming pool water in Micro-organisms polluted swimming pools is the demand. Every swimmer adds 10,00,000 to 100,00,00,000 microorganisms to the water. The water itself contains microorganisms, as well. After oxidation a disinfectant must be added to the water to kill pathogenic microorganisms. They should be harmless and non-irritating to swimmers and attendants. They must be active in small concentrations and remain their activity for a long time. The disinfectant must be easily traced and measured and should be safe to use.
Ozonation Over Chlorination in Pools
On average, the human body will absorb about half a litre of pool water every hour!
Chlorine reacts with organic waste and forms a large number of highly toxic chloro-organic compounds, also referred to as “combined chlorine”. These are well known carcinogens and are very poisonous to marine life.
For chlorine the minimum concentration in swimming pools is set to 0,5 milligram per litre. The maximum level is set to 1,5 mg/l. For outdoor pools and indoor pools smaller than 20 m2, the max level is set to 5,0 mg/l.
Lowering the chlorine concentration is undesirable because this increases the risk of waterborne diseases. When too much chlorine is present, it can cause eye and mucous membrane irritation, as a result of chloramine formation. Some chlorine by-products have been linked to higher incidences of asthma, lung damage, stillbirths, miscarriages and bladder cancer, according to credible research conducted in the U.S., Canada, Norway, and Australia.
Benefits of Ozone in Swimming Pools
- Bacteria kill rate of Ozone is up to 3000 times faster than Chorine.
- 50% stronger oxidizer than chlorine
- Reduces traditional chemical use between 60% - 90%
- Reduce handling and storage of unsafe chemicals
- Reduce constant purchasing of harmful chemicals
- Eliminate red, irritated eyes and dry, itchy skin
- Remove unpleasant chlorine / chloramine odors
- No adverse health or environmental effects
- Improvement of the filter and coagulant capacities = reduction of coagulant use & less backwashing
- Ozone is a good micro flocculation agent
- Ozone quickly reverts back to oxygen if unused
- Ozone can remove lead metal
- Ozone is excellent colour removal
- Ozone has oxidational potential in water is 2.07
- Operating cost of using ozone is low
